So many of us go through our lives feeling that no one truly understands the depth of who we are.
And of course, how can others understand the depth of who we are when we don’t understand ourselves?
So many of us are seeking to feel loved and accepted for who we are. To be genuinely understood is to feel loved and accepted.
The Existential-Humanistic (E-H) approach, which began in the 1950s, was a response to the ways that behavioral and psychoanalytic therapies seemed to reduce human beings to a set of drives, impulses, or childhood conflicts. The early pioneers of E-H therapy pushed back, saying in essence that to be human is to be so much more than our drives, conflicts, impulses, and behaviors--we are whole, unique, and beyond reduction!
From my perspective, this statement is the starting point for every new therapy. While I am also a student of the unconscious and incorporate many psychodynamic concepts in my work, my foundational belief is that the person sitting before me is also a unique, creative, and ever-evolving human being that we can discover together through the therapeutic process.
I am dedicated to working with individual clients who are ready to embark on a journey into themselves on the deepest levels. My approach is to stay in close contact with your experience and to reflect what I’m seeing and hearing on multiple layers of listening. Together with my clients, we learn, to quote Theodore Reik, to “listen with our third ear.”
Through listening deeply together and bringing curiosity to bear, your own capacity to listen to all parts of you will grow. This process will help you to develop genuine compassion and acceptance for all that you are. I believe this to be the ultimate aspiration of any good therapy: that you become an effective inner parent for even the darkest corners of your psyche.
Are you ready to take the journey?
